This course seeks to provide students with the theoretical and practical competences necessary to understand the EU government system, the elaboration of European policies and their impact at Member States’ level and from the point of view of EU citizens. Students will be able to identify key elements in the decision and configuration processes of European policies as well as the clear impacts on Member States. Beyond conceptual knowledge, students will be able to develop their research skills through examination, the analysis of practical cases and a theoretical essay based upon the topic of EU policies.


Title: EU Institutions and Politics

The objective of the module is to explain the historical process of EU integration and the evolution and current workings of both the main European political institutions and their inter-institutional processes. It also seeks to analyse the main political dynamics of the Union through the study of recent and most significative political events at European level. At the same time, the module also aims at familiarising students with sources, databases and statistical data from European institutions. Finally, one of the fundamental objectives of the course is also dedicated to an introduction of the main theories of European integration.


Title: Comparative World Politics

The purpose of the module is to familiarise students with the analysis of comparative politics. It is designed to provide a vision of the main topics related to the field and the specific context of different countries in terms of political development. The main issue of the module is based around the understanding of the political (and at times, democratic) development of the world’s different regions. By the end of the course, students will be provided with the theoretical and practical tools to obtain political info about any country in the world as well as a basic understanding of the features and processes leading to democracy’s development. Special focus in also provided in European Union related topics, especially in terms of democracy, and to European countries more in general. 


Title: Administration and Public Policies

The module purposefully focuses on the extensive concepts and models currently employed in the analysis of public administrations and public policies from a sectorial perspective. At the same time, it also maintains as constant referents the different comparative experiences in administration, public management and public policies through the specific case-studies set in different political and cultural backgrounds. The European dimension of public policies is also included in the topics of the module.
